The Chiwoxy is a wonderful blend of the Chihuahua and the Wire Fox Terrier. This is a very small or toy-sized dog that was bred to be a family pet. The size of the breed and their spirited personality is not always suitable for small children. The Chiwoxy is about eight or nine inches tall and weighs about 10 pounds with big ears and eyes, a round head, and can have a short to medium length thick double coat of any color. Due to their small size, this feisty dog tends to be proud and will take over the household if you let them. Take your time to train your pup properly and be consistent so they know who is the boss of the house.

Chiwoxy Breed History

The Chihuahua has different histories, depending on who you talk to. Some believe they were first seen around 3,000 years ago in Egypt while others believe the breed started in China in the 1500s. Another theory is that the Chihuahua originated in South and Central America from a native breed called Techichi, which was a tiny dog that was sometimes sacrificed by those of the Toltec religion. At the time, the Aztecs believed that the small red dog would guide your soul to the underworld, and every wealthy family had one so the little dog could be cremated with the dead. Nobody knows for sure what the true story is, but the most common is that these dogs were abandoned after the Aztecs were conquered in the 16th century and found again 300 years later in Chihuahua, Mexico, which is where they got their name. The Chihuahua was registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1904. Coincidentally, the Wire Fox Terrier’s past is also a bit of a mystery. While some believe the breed came from the Rough-Coated Terrier of Durham, Derbyshire, and Wales; others say they also include Beagle and came from Shropshire and Cheshire in England. Either way, they were used for fox and vermin hunting during the 1800s and were not distinguished from Smooth Fox Terriers until 1984. It is thought that they were bred together with the Smooth Fox Terriers to decrease their size and whiten their coat. The Wire Fox Terrier joined the roster of the American Kennel Club in 1885. The Chiwoxy is a cute mix of these unique breeds.

Chiwoxy Breed Appearance

The Chiwoxy is a tiny dog of about 10 pounds and is usually about 8 to 10 inches tall. They have a large, round head, big ears, short legs, a long tail, and a short muzzle. Their big eyes are dark and they generally have an eager expression. Their double coat is usually short but may be of medium length with a soft undercoat and tough, wiry outer coat. They can come in almost any color such as tan, yellow, black, brown, white, and red. However, they are most often reddish-gold. This little go-getter has small feet and legs and if they stay active they are usually well-muscled.

Chiwoxy Breed Maintenance

The Chiwoxy needs quite a bit of maintenance due to their wiry coat and should be brushed at least three times a week and hand-stripped. To hand-strip your dog, hold a few hairs between your thumb and index finger and then pull them straight out from the root. You can also use a stripping knife but hand-stripping is recommended. This is done every six months to keep their hair shiny, colorful, and doing so prevents shedding. You should also check your dog’s ears once a week for a buildup of wax or dirt and clean them as needed. Trim her toenails when necessary and brush her teeth a couple of times a week to prevent tooth decay.

Chiwoxys often suffer from patellar luxation. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Our pet insurance tool lets you compare plans from leading companies like Figo and Spot. Find the “pawfect” plan for your pet in just a few clicks!

Chiwoxy Temperament

This breed is not really suitable for families with young children because the Chiwoxy can have a short temper to go along with their short stature. Some call this the small dog syndrome. If they are not socialized while young, they can be skittish and snap at other pets and strangers. In fact, if you do something they do not like, they may be snappy with you too. It is best to be firm and fairly strict with your Chiwoxy but use positive reinforcement rather than physical punishment. Affection goes a long way with this little canine, who will bond and learn to keep their feisty temperature in check if treated with kindness while still showing that you are the leader. This breed can be difficult to house train and many people choose to use mat-training until their pup gets it right.

Chiwoxy Activity Requirements

The sprightly Chiwoxy has a lot of nervous energy and a high metabolism so they need at least 45 to 60 minutes of exercise every day. If they do not get enough activity, they tend to become destructive and can be more touchy than usual. They do like to curl up on the couch with you or sit in your lap but they definitely need exercise daily to prevent too much built up energy. The Chiwoxy gets bored easily and needs to be supervised around other animals because they are fearless enough to start a fight with a dog much bigger than themselves. A brisk walk, long game of fetch, or a hike at the park can prevent boredom and provide exercise.

I adopted this baby from a foster program. She had ticks and fleas and I think her hair has been shaved. Back dew claws look awful! But she is SO affectionate and playful. We are having a little trouble with going potty outside but I can tell she is very smart. Going on week 2 for us and I am in LOVE with this little girl

I adopted Rocky 9 months ago. He had been in the shelter for 7 month, adopted twice and returned. When I saw his picture I fell in love. I knew he needed to get out of the shelter. He needed someone who understood him. He had food aggression when I brought him home. He has gotten so I can sit on the floor next to him while he eats now. He was very touchy. He bit be several times but now seems to realize I am not going to send him back to the shelter and is so loving. He takes a little time to warm up to new dogs but has made a few dog friends now. He is still nervous around my younger grandchildren so they are supervised at all times.

Got him at 8 weeks. Came with fleas, dehydration, poor diet. Fed him probiotics, olive oil and fish oil, gel vitamin drops, shredded chicken. First poop was very hard. Needed a bath. Got new collar and leash, new sweater, new bed. Took to bed immediately, took to potty pad immediately. Shows extreme intelligence already, plus no lonely yelps. Once his face was trimmed a little and nails trimmed, I got a darling boy on my hands. Very proud of him.

I got Walter from the shelter, he came from a hoarding situation. I had no idea what his breed was, just that he looked like he had been electrocuted. He was under weight and sad. He quickly became the best partner in crime. I have a jack chi mix who was temperamental with other dogs, but they quickly became the best of pals. Walter is not very high energy and doesn’t like toys (probably stems from his past). He definitely had potty training issues, and we are still not perfect. I use a grass indoor pee mat since I live in an apartment, and he has gotten better about peeing outside. He used to not pee at all outside, but this was probably due to his past life. Unlike some of the other reviews, Walter DOES shed. He likes to get the zoomies with Stanley (the jack chi) and the cat too, and that’s his form of playing. He is my fiercest protector and will attack given the command, even though he doesn’t do much damage with his little teeth. He doesn’t like children or other dogs besides his brother. He is rather snappy with others, but not his mom or dad. He is also human food aggressive. Sometimes he wants to guard your own food. He is quirky and the absolute best!!

She thinks i left her alone a year the way she barks when i come in. I actually had to buy her a thundershirt when i first got her from the humane society. She was to go home with an older couple, no pets or young children. Found her for my friends, time they got their she bonded with me & i had 3 other dogs. Friends didn’t want her. Manager told me to go home & get my other dogs. I was the first person in her 2 months at the pound that she bonded with! She is submissive to them. She loves VERY big boy dogs !

I rescued my Chiwoxy when she was almost 2 years old, so I have had her nearly a year and a half. She is almost perfect – so smart, docile, quiet, non-destructive, low-shedding/maintenance, and well-mannered. The only complaint I have (though she is getting so much better) is that she is very shy with strangers – not aggressive, just skittish. We have 2 people in our household and she loves both of us, but it is readily apparent that I’m her favorite as she follows me from room-to-room (unless food is in the equation). She’s the best!

Scruffy just appeared at our house, we have no clue where she came from, none of our neighbors claimed her so we are assuming she was dropped off by her owners who, evidently, didn’t want her. She is a very sweet girl but she is also kind of skittish. She is playful with us and our other dogs. She has adapted pretty well. She can be a bit snappy if things don’t go her way!!! We’ve only had her for a few months but she has already captured our hearts. Not sure of her age, but guessing her to be around a year old. We have a male Chiweeny that she really likes, he is her favorite playmate. We have two female Deer Chihuahuas that she enjoys playing with and she loves playing chase with our Akbash all around the yard. She has given us so much entertainment. Hubby is her favorite person, she follows him everywhere and prefers his lap but she likes to play with me more than him and does get in my lap (when he’s not around)!!!

We have been crate training him and he does such a good job! We love him so much!

We have had our Chiwoxy for about 2 years now and rescued him from the shelter when we heard he came from a household where he was kept in the garage, neglected, and isolated. From 6lbs to now a healthy 9 lbs, he is a very quiet dog who enjoys relaxing on his bed, sunbathing, and going on walks. He’s a pretty picky eater, will only eat certain snacks, and does not play with any toys what so ever. Doesn’t really play fight, but I assume he Just doesn’t understand the appeal. Pretty territorial and anxious when strangers come into the house, and very skittish when it comes to big dogs. Otherwise, he is a cuddle bug and very attached to both of us and is a gentle sweetheart. Grooming wise, he gets a wash once every two weeks and brush twice a week since the head hair is very thin but his body has thicker fur and sheds.

She was incredibly hard to potty train, she now has a AstroTurf space that has a pad under it she goes on because if it’s cold out she won’t go (we got the AstroTurf thing from the pet store) she tries to eat everything! Toys with no stuffing have proven a better option. she loves to Dress up most days however if she manages to get the sweater off it’s a goner! We have found sweaters are pretty necessary because she is so small and gets cold. But she is,always loving, a great snuggler And always happy to see you! We got her from a friend who was scared he was too big and might step on her.

Very affectionate and protective of owners and family. Radagast is the alpha dog, he has all the other dogs under his command no matter how big they are, he is the one in charge of the pack other than me. He ensures everyone plays nice. Rad is a sun worshiper, and loves the sun no matter how hot it is. Chiwoxy’s are best suited as a companion dog, they like to be with their owners 24/7. Generally a very curious breed, if not supervised they will wander off to explore. Chiwoxy’s can have a big stubborn streak but are very willing to please their owners. Because he sleeps in our bed, i bathe him every 2 weeks. I brush him every day and have to cut his nails about once every 6 to 8 weeks. He gets a big groom in May when the warm weather comes, his under coat needs to be stripped out properly once a year or skin disease may occur.

I adopted ralphie from a rescue about 6 months. When I first met him in his foster home he was very anxious and submissive to all the other dogs. He had been a stray on the streets for some time and even had a hole in his ear from being attacked at some point. I originally was looking for a yorkie mix but fell in love with ralphie when I met him. At first he was very shy when we got home and wouldn’t leave his crate most of the first day. However by the end of the first night he decided to jump in my bed and cuddle up next to me under the sheets. I have been working very hard to help him with his anxiety and it has improved immensely. He’s no longer fearful of many things that used to cause him to freeze and panic. He’s a very small boy at 6 lbs with very curly wavy hair and a mix of shorter thin wiry Hair. He is shy around new people and will bark if he is surprised with new company however he warms up fairly quickly. He also absolutely loves burrowing in sheets or any soft material he can wrap around him.

Apollo is by far the SWEETEST dog i have ever had in my life. He is energetic, loyal, playful, great with kids ( 8 yr old and a 4 yr old) , great with his furry brother and sister ( a applehead chihuahua and a german shepard), a little honary( but so is the chihuahua). He learns VERY quickly and for only being 8 months is intelligent in many ways. He gets along with everyone in the family but has fubbed me “mother” having rescued him from a bad breeder and follows me EVERYWHERE! He cuddles and has the family members including myself hold him literally like a baby, which i have never seen a dog do before. He has a very unusual personality not in a bad way it makes him unique. He loves to hike and do outdoor activities as well as stay at home and relax and cuddle. We all love him so much and all the dogs get along great! I am so happy to have him in our family and we cant wait to have him for many years to come!!

Two mile walk every evening, car rides

After 12 1/2 years in the family, my/our dear 14 year old puggle passed away in 2019. I was heartbroken and took some time off to decide if I wanted to start over again with another dog. It’s such a huge, long-term commitment to a living thing that will forever depend on me completely, so I didn’t want to rush into an emotional decision just because I missed my puggle buddy. Friends and family urged me to adopt and give another dog a good life as a tribute to my dear departed puggle.
After eight months I decided to once again take the plunge. A cute little irresistible face popped up on my Internet search and I adopted 6 year old Roxie from a local shelter. She was a voluntary surrender by her previous owner, who from what I was told by the shelter was an elderly with health issues and could no longer care for her. She was not surrendered for any known health or behavior issues.
Roxie’s sweet face and disposition immediately won me over, and her evolution over the year since she first came home has been fun to watch. I don’t think she got to do much in her first six years, or go very far. Her energy level was not what I was expecting from a healthy 6 year old terrier mix, which for the first couple of months was significantly less than my 14 year old previous dog’s energy level had been right up until two days before she passed away from cancer. I’m a healthy, active, retired widower whose children are all grown and gone, and I got her to be a 24/7 companion like my puggle had been. That was a bit of a gamble. At first Roxie was a bit standoffish and non-committal (Who’s this guy?), but I gave her time and space.
As time went on she really come out of her shell. Her energy and stamina increased and she grew to love (and expect) her daily adventures. Two to two and a half mile daily walks, evening car rides, playing games like “hide the treat”, etc. I also like to travel by car quite a bit, camp, hike, and sight-see, and she’s already been to sixteen states with more planned for this summer. She’s a good little enthusiastic traveler.
She’s also smart, quick to learn, anxious to please, and her vocabulary has grown by leaps and bounds. She’s not a nuisance barker, she loves people including children, and after some initial tail-waggy excited barking when she first sees a strange dog (which quickly goes away once she gets to meet them), she gets along well with other dogs. I couldn’t ask for a better behaved little companion.
I rate my little chiwoxy buddy “four paws up”!
