Gummy Bears Gave Everyone Diarrhea

Here’s a scary story for you. It’s a moonless Halloween night. A tree branch scrapes across the window. Out of your bulging bag of candy you pull handfuls of gummy bears, ravenously stuffing them into your maw. Suddenly, a noise! You freeze. A single bear drops from your sticky grasp. There it is again. A burble. Then a growl. You clutch your stomach, writhing in pain on the floor. It’s the terrible curse of the sugar-free gummy bear!

Cutting out sugar is a noble goal. Sugar’s not great for you! It causes cavities. It makes you fat. Unfortunately for the Haribo candy company, they chose to replace the sugar in their gummy bears with Lycasin. They’ve since taken them off the market.

Lycasin’s main ingredient is maltitol. Maltitol is what’s known as a sugar alcohol, and it’s a very good replacement for table sugar (sucrose). It’s almost as sweet, it forms granular crystals, it even dissolves in water like sucrose.

Maltitol is made in labs from the sugar maltose, which like many sugars is two rings made of oxygen and carbon joined together. To make a sugar alcohol, chemists break one of those rings apart. The remaining ring still activates the sweet sensors in our taste buds and our bodies can use it for energy. The broken ring, on the other hand, passes through the digestive system largely untouched. Which means: fewer calories. And also: very unpleasant side effects.

Reviews of the sugar-free bears on Amazon—Buzzfeed has a good roundup—describe intense cramping, bloating, noxious farts and some of the worst imaginable diarrhea. An intestinal “power wash.” A “flood of toxic waste.” A “volcano.” A “gummy bear assault.”

When the indigestible parts of maltitol make it to your intestines they draw water into the digestive tract by osmosis. All that water gets things, uh, moving. For instance, it gets you moving in the direction of the nearest bathroom.

That’s not all. Your body can’t fully digest maltitol. But research shows it gets broken down somewhat into molecules like acetate and butyrate. Those compounds are good food for the bacteria that thrive in our guts. Those bacteria like to make gas. Hence the bloating and the—hey, did somebody step on a duck?

Sugar alcohols like maltitol are actually prescribed by doctors to help people poop. They’re called osmotic laxatives. A 2002 study found that 40 grams of Lycasin for an adult is enough to do it. So how many gummy bears will give you the runs?

Haribo doesn’t say how much lycasin was in each bear, but it was the first listed ingredient, meaning the largest by weight. Gummy bear recipes put the amount of sweetener at about one-third of the total weight. And a little googling tells me a gummy bear weighs around 3 grams. That comes to about 20 bears to get your guts bubbling. Anecdotally, people say about 15 sugarfree bears did the trick. For a kid it would be even fewer.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does consider lycasin a safe food additive. It recommends limiting yourself to 100 grams each day. For what it’s worth, Haribo included a warning on their sugar-free bears that some people might experience unpleasant side effects. After stories of the candies’ effects went viral, the company stopped selling them.

The moral of this tale is everything in moderation. Some things, maybe not at all.
