It’s not just people who can have allergies–dogs can have them too! Nobody wants to see their canine best friend suffering from allergy symptoms, and many parents are trying salmon oil to give Rover some relief. This trend may have left you wondering if salmon oil really works for dog allergies. What Are Dog Allergies? Allergies in dogs are actually more common than you may realize. In fact, it is estimated that around 10% of dogs have allergies. But what exactly are allergies? The term ‘allergies’ describes something that could cause an allergic reaction for you or your pet. This is when the body comes into contact with something that is not typically harmful, and has an out of proportion reaction to it. Essentially, the body sees the trigger, or allergen, as something that is harmful, and produces a response to protect itself. The trigger can be a food item or something in the environment. Food Some dogs have food allergies, which means that certain foods will need to be eliminated from their diet. Dogs can also have food intolerances, which is not quite the same thing, and will not produce the same reaction. Food allergies are usually genetic, and are triggered when the dog is exposed to the allergen. The most common food allergies in dogs are beef, lamb, pork, rabbit, chicken, fish, dairy, wheat, soy, and egg. Environment Environmental allergies are when the allergen is something in the outside world. Some people refer to environmental allergies as seasonal allergies, however, this does not mean that they are limited to specific times of the year. What Are The Most Common Allergies Dogs Have? The most common allergies that dogs can have include: What Symptoms Are Seen With Dog Allergies? The exactsymptoms of an allergy does depend on what is the trigger of the allergic reaction. Skin Allergies Some of the symptoms of skin allergies can include itching, irritation, redness, and oozing. You may notice that your dog starts biting or scratching their skin excessively. He may lick at the area excessively. If the itchiness seems to be on their back, or at the base of the tail, it could indicate that they have an allergy to fleas. If your dog is having severe allergic reactions, you may notice that they have scabs on their skin, or lesions. Sometimes, they can have minor, or extreme hair loss. You may also notice that they have a secondary bacterial, or yeast infection on their skin. You may even notice a change in their skin texture and pigmentation. Stomach Issues Stomach issues can be a symptom of allergies. You may notice they have diarrhea or vomiting. They may seem ‘off’ or looking to chew to try to settle their stomach. They will not only exhibit stomach issues, and will often show other symptoms as well. Other Symptoms Other symptoms of allergies can include: What Can Dog Allergies Lead To? The outcome of your dog’s allergies depends on the severity of the allergic reaction. In many cases, your vet will give you lifestyle advice, such as changing your pet’s diet, and possibly medication to treat the reaction. Severe cases can cause long term damage, or even death, so if your dog has a severe reaction to an allergen, they should see an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. What Is Salmon Oil? Salmon Oil is an Omega-3 supplement made from salmon. It can be made from either ‘wild-caught’ salmon or ‘sea-farmed’ salmon. In most cases, wild salmon is preferred over farmed salmon; however, for salmon oil, farmed salmon is better. It contains more omega-6 than wild salmon, and it has a shorter harvesting and processing time. This means that it is fresher when it reaches you and your dog. Salmon oil has three types of omega-3 fatty acids. It has EPA, DHA, and ALA. EPA and DHA are long-chain fatty acids, and are known for aiding in brain development. ALA is a short-chain fatty acid which is known for fighting free radicals. What Does Salmon Oil Help With? Your dogs can greatly benefit from salmon oil. It can help your dog with a magnitude of issues, from allergies, to their overall health. Inflammation Salmon oil can help reduce inflammation in the body. This inflammation may be in the stomach or intestines, but salmon oil can also help ease joint inflammation, and symptoms of other conditions. Allergies Salmon oil can help you treat and manage your dog’s allergies. It can help strengthen the skin, and create a barrier against allergens. This means that when your dog comes into contact with the allergen, their body will not have the same over the top reaction to it. This can help your dog maintain a healthy immune system as well. Coat Salmon oil helps from the inside out. It creates a good environment inside your dog’s body for coat development. This means that salmon oil can make your dog’s coat shiny, soft and healthy. Overall Health The omega-3 fatty acids in salmon oil can also help to maintain your dog’s overall health. It helps maintain and improve cognitive function. It helps keep the liver, kidneys, heart functioning as they should be. How Do You Give Salmon Oil To Dogs? Most salmon oil for dogs comes in liquid form and some are available in a pump bottle to make it easier for you to give it to your dog. Some dogs may eat it off a spoon, like a treat, but other pet parents mix it through regular food. The dose will depend on the size of your dog. A good guideline is: What Kind Of Salmon Oil Should You Look For? The most important thing you need to look for is salmon oil that is safe for dogs. As long as the oil is dog safe, the only other thing you need to be sure of is that you buy the best quality available within your budget. Salmon oil can help give your dog some relief from their allergies, as long as they are not allergic to salmon! You should check with their vet before giving your dog any supplements, especially if they are on any other medications. Sumary: Salmon oil for dogs has seen an increased interest in the past few years. I have found it to be one of the healthiest supplements one can give to their dog. If you choose well, this oil is more natural and pure than any other supplement. As you know, dog treats, chews, and additional supplements may include fillers and non-essential ingredients.
After helping thousands of pet owners over the years, the main benefit I found in salmon oil for dogs is allergy support. We will discuss its other benefits below.
Benefits of salmon oil for dogsMost people might only know about a fish oil supplement’s two or three health benefits. However, if you consider buying this oil, you should know that there are at least nine proven salmon oil health benefits.
Allergy support
Allergies affect as much as 20% of dogs in the United States. Allergies come in many forms, like itching, scratching, and hot spots. Since it is often difficult to find the allergy cause, salmon oil supplements allow pet owners to relieve their pets of allergies. After starting giving salmon oil to your dog, allow two to three weeks to notice an improvement in your dog’s allergies.
Whether your dog has a food allergy or is allergic to dust, pollen, or grass, salmon oil will benefit him.
Anti-inflammatory
Fish oil is rich in omega fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids come in the forms of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and have anti-inflammatory properties. For this reason, fish oil helps combat inflamed and painful joints, itchy skin, and gastritis.
Improves cognitive functionVeterinarians agree that DHA supports dogs’ cognitive health. Since salmon oil comes with high DHA levels, it can support dogs’ brains and puppies’ brain development.
On top of that, Omega-3s support dogs’ vision and retinal health.
Rejuvenates soft and shiny coats
If you spend some time reading reviews about a particular fish oil supplement, you might find a few mention the skin & coat benefits. Adding fish oil to your dog’s diet will rejuvenate their skin and coat. Like allergies, you should expect to see an improvement within two to three weeks after starting daily supplementation. Remember that healthy skin starts from the inside out.
It supports the immune system
Allergies often stem from a weakened immune system. Knowing this, you might want to add salmon oil to your dog’s diet as it boosts dogs’ immune systems. A dog with a healthy immune system can fight off allergies before developing. Not only that, your dog will be more active. Fish oil significantly improves dogs’ overall health.
Fights cancerThere has been little official research on EPA and DHA supplementation in dogs with cancer. However, the literature is quite extensive for humans, and the sum of both human and animal literature suggests that Omega-3s are beneficial in fighting cancer. It is particularly true when the dog’s diet is currently low in these fatty acids.
Supports heart health
Dogs need healthy fatty acids like Omega-3 to maintain a healthy heart. Omega-3s also help lower high blood pressure and decrease the risk of heart disease.
Improves organ function
Salmon oil supports several organs in pets, such as the liver and many organs that make up the digestive system. If your dog has kidney disease or problems, this oil could benefit your pup.
Improves overall health
Salmon oil improves pets’ overall health thanks to the combined health benefits. Our furry friends can maximize their life expectancy and play more with more robust immune systems, cognitive function, heart health, brain function, and organ function. Always keep an eye on ingredients to ensure the product you find is as pure as possible.
What are the fatty acids found in fish oil?Fish oil typically contains three fatty acids: omega-3s, 6s, and 9s. Let’s take a deeper look at each one and what it brings to pets.
Omega-3s
Omega-3s are behind most of the benefits we listed above. They support the immune systems and many organs. They consist of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).
Omega-6s
Linoleic acid is an Omega-6 fatty acid and is considered one of the most important ones—omega-6s support dogs’ skin health by maintaining the skin’s outermost water barrier.
Omega-9s
Omega-9s are considered non-essential to your pet’s diet since dogs can synthesize Omega 9 fatty acids. However, Omega-9s still bring a health benefit as they support immune systems.
Benefits of pollock oil for dogs
While researching fish oil, you might find that two popular options are salmon and pollock. Pollock is rich in EPA and DHA with slightly lower levels than salmon. However, pollock has a great benefit that many pet owners underestimate: it has a more pleasant scent than salmon. For this reason, I tend to recommend a mix of Salmon & Pollock oil to pet owners as they might find the overall smell more pleasant while maintaining high fatty acids levels.
The best salmon oil for dogs reviewedYou might be wondering which salmon supplement to give your pet. While searching for these supplements, you will find many different options. I wanted to break down the other factors you want to look at when choosing a high-quality product. Of course, you can always consult your veterinarian and discuss which product might be most beneficial to your pet.
Highest quality: wild-caught
You might have noticed that some oils advertise Wild-caught salmon or pollock. As you know, salmon is mainly farmed and contains high levels of antibiotics. Wild salmon is healthier.
I recommend getting Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil or Wild Alaskan Pollock Oil as they have lower Mercury levels than 95% of other fish sources. For instance, our Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil Formula has less than half the usual Mercury level detected in Fresh (farmed) salmon. Therefore, it is healthier than any other common Omega-3 source like sardines or regular salmon fillets. As an added benefit, Wild Alaskan Fish is caught in clean USA waters instead of other sources like Norway and Iceland.
Regular salmon
If your pet store doesn’t offer wild-caught fish oil or the price is essential to you, you may look at regular salmon oils. Keep in mind that this option is not as healthy. In doubt, you can take a picture of the ingredients and supplement panel and show it to your vet. This oil might not be produced in the USA.
