NEW YORK And on the menu is food that strengthens your hair, cleanses your skin and helps you look younger.

Eyewitness News reporter Lauren Glassberg has the story.

Hsiao-lien Boardman has gathered her family for dinner at Hakata TonTon. The name gives away the fact that it’s Japanese. But don’t expect any sushi there.

The twist is that everything is made with ton-soku. The translation, pied de cochon. The translation of that?

Pigs feet!

It is the soul foul in south Japan, where the owner, Himi Okajimi, is from. And there are some benefits to serving and eating pigs feet, as he explains through his translator.

“Ton-soku is the only food that you can get cheap and make people beautiful at the same time,” he said.

Health benefits? From pigs feet? Well, apparently, they’re loaded with collagen. And collagen is good for your skin. It helps prevent wrinkles.

And at Hakata TonTon, the pigs feet are served in a number of ways, from crunchy and deep-fried to dressed up.

It’s like a pork dumpling. It doesn’t taste like pigs feet, per se.

And get this, there’s even pigs feet carbonara.

Imagine eating rich carbonara to help you look younger! Eating collagen won’t do for your skin what an injection of collagen can, but for some diners, that’s not the point of pigs feet.

Pig’s feet is certainly no exception to this rule as they are low in fat and packed with collagen. As many of us already know, collagen helps us with skin elasticity and nail and hair growth. For that reason, many people believe that eating pig’s feet can keep you young and beautiful with a healthy glow!

The eaters of pig feet

The feet of domestic pigs are typically salted and smoked in the same manner as other pork cuts, such as hams and bacon, and are known as pickled pigs feet in the Southern United States, Mexican, Chinese, Italian, and Scandinavian cuisine.

Pork ribs are lower in meat than other pig parts but are higher in collagen, and when cooked for a long time at a low temperature, the meat practically falls off the bone.

What is the alternative term for pigs feet?

The culinary term for a pig’s foot is a pig’s trotter, also known as a pettitoe or, occasionally, a pig’s foot. The cuts are used in many different dishes all over the world and saw a resurgence in popularity in the late 2000s.

Do you consume pigs’ feet’ skin?

Pigs’ feet are a great addition to soups and stews because they have little meat and a lot of gelatin in the skin and bones, which gives the liquid body. If you’re going to eat them whole, it would be a shame not to crisp the skin.

How are pigs’ feet consumed?

You can boil, then pan roast them until they almost completely melt off the knuckle, or—and this is what makes me happiest—you can pan barbecue them in a spicy, sweet, tomato-based sauce. Pig’s feet are simply the southernmost portion of a ham, just another joint.
