This is probably an anal gland infection if your dog’s anus is black. Dogs can get infections in their glands very easily, especially if they have not been cleaning themselves properly. An anal gland infection is an infection that may have started externally but this is now an internal issue and can not be solved simply by cleaning the dogs anus.

  • Visit a vet

If you visit the vet, they will be able to have a look at the dog and most probably give antibiotics to clear up the infection. You may also want to talk to the vet about expressing the dog’s bowels so that it is less likely for the infection to reoccur in the future. Expressing the bowels is a process where you press on the anus so that there is a bowel movement when a dog would not usually clear its bowels.

You may also want to talk to your vet about why this might have happened, whether it is because of uncleanliness or if there is a deeper underlying issue that you need to address.

  • Abscess

There may also be an issue if the infection has also created an abscess. An abscess is an area of infection that can become very swollen and sore.

Do not keep your dog at home and hope that everything will be okay, these infections can be very painful for your dog. You should get medical help for them so that they are not in pain and discomfort for too long.

Dogs and other animals can not tell you when they are in pain and for this reason you should take them to be looked after by a professional as soon as you can. This will help to find out what the problem is and also the vet will be able to prescribe any medication that may be needed.
